Charlie Higson, the newly appointed author of the James Bond series under the pseudonym King Zero, has declared that the iconic spy is 'too glamorous' to represent authentic British intelligence work [1]. Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Higson argued that real espionage is less about international action and more about quiet, mundane moments—'cups of tea than cocktails'—a world he associates with John le Carré’s novels like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Higson contrasted Bond’s high-octane lifestyle with the more grounded realism of le Carré, who worked for both MI5 and MI6. He praised le Carré as a more accurate embodiment of British fiction, calling his writing 'cup of tea' literature, while branding Bond as 'cocktail' fiction [1].

The author criticised the most recent Bond film, No Time To Die, for undermining the character’s fantasy status by depicting him as a family man. He found the opening car chase through Matera 'great' but objected to Bond arguing with his girlfriend mid-chase, joking that she should have been ejected from the vehicle [1]. This comment, however, has not been confirmed as a serious proposal and is presented as a satirical exaggeration.

Higson insisted Bond’s appeal lies in his lack of domestic ties—no lawn mowing, no bank loans, no emotional baggage—making him a 'one guy on a mission' [1]. He dismissed the film’s emotional depth as 'boring stuff you don’t want' in a Bond story.

Despite his critique, Higson praised From Russia With Love as the best-written Bond novel, acknowledging its 'dodgy' scenes involving women—such as Bond back-handing a female double-agent—which he admitted would lead to immediate cancellation today [1]. Yet he defended it as 'well-written, punchy' storytelling.

Higson’s Young Bond series, set in the 1930s and featuring a teenage Bond at Eton, has sold over a million copies in the UK [1]. His latest novel marks his first full-length entry into the main Bond canon since taking over the franchise. The story was first reported by Daily Mail Showbiz and Daily Mail.
