UK Businesses Push Cash Payments Amid Digital Shift
A new survey reveals over half of UK shoppers were recently encouraged to pay in cash, with Northern Ireland leading the trend.
More than half of UK consumers have been asked to pay in cash at a business within the past eight weeks, according to a survey by YouGov commissioned by Link, the ATM and cash access network [1]. The findings indicate a surprising resurgence in physical currency use, with 75% of those prompted opting to pay with coins or banknotes.
The businesses most likely to encourage cash payments include cafes, restaurants, independent shops, hairdressers, barbers, beauty salons, outdoor markets, pubs, retail stores, and supermarkets [1]. The trend appears to be particularly strong in Northern Ireland, where 69% of respondents said they were asked to pay in cash, and 88% complied — the highest rate in the UK. Scotland and Wales followed closely, with 82% and 78% of those asked choosing cash, respectively.
Graham Mott, Link’s director of strategy, said the results show cash remains a practical and preferred option for many, especially among small businesses [1]. He emphasized that a resilient ATM network is now more important than ever, given the increasing demand for physical money. Mott also noted the surprising willingness of consumers to use cash when prompted, highlighting its continued relevance in everyday transactions.
The survey, conducted between September 10 and 11, included responses from over 2,100 UK adults [1]. While digital payments have dominated in recent years, the data suggests a growing preference for cash in certain sectors, particularly in personal services and local retail. The findings challenge the assumption that cash is fading into obsolescence.
What happens next remains to be seen. If small businesses continue to promote cash, it could signal a broader cultural shift or a response to rising transaction fees, security concerns, or a desire for anonymity. The trend may also reflect a growing distrust in digital payment systems or a preference for immediate, tangible exchanges.
As cash use stabilises in the UK, the role of ATMs and physical access points may become increasingly vital to maintaining financial inclusion. The story was first reported by Mirror.
