City’s Past Tainted? Kompany Stays Silent on 115 Charges
Vincent Kompany says he’s 'not too occupied' by Manchester City’s guilty verdict on 115 financial rule breaches, focusing instead on Bayern Munich’s upcoming…
Vincent Kompany has made his first public comment since an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of the majority of 115 charges related to breaches of Premier League financial regulations between 2009-10 and 2017-18 [1]. The club, which Kompany played for from 2008 to 2019, admitted to over £830 million in disguised owner funding through sham arrangements, enabling compliance with financial rules [2]. Despite the verdict, Kompany said he remains proud of the achievements during his 11-year tenure, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups.
He stated: "I played 11 years for the club. I’ve loved all the years I played for the club and everything we achieved and done on the pitch, that’s something I’m really proud of. Everything else, as a player you’re not a part of that" [1]. Kompany, now Bayern Munich head coach, said he is focused solely on upcoming matches and not dwelling on the case.
City has lodged a formal appeal, claiming the commission’s judgment contains "clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe" and insists it has "a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" [2]. The club’s current manager, Enzo Maresca, said he is "completely trust[ed]" in the club’s leadership and believes the titles won during the period in question are not tainted [1]. He added: "There is not another club in the world where I would like to be".
Speculation persists over potential penalties, including the possible stripping of titles won during the affected seasons—three of which were won under Kompany’s captaincy [2]. However, this outcome has not been confirmed and remains a possibility according to. Kompany, 40, maintains strong personal ties to Manchester, having married a local woman and raised three children in the city during his playing years.
Despite being linked as a future City manager, Kompany has not indicated any interest in returning to the club, remaining focused on his role at Bayern Munich [2].
