Gianni Infantino's chances of securing a fourth term as FIFA president have dramatically improved after his main rival, Aleksander Ceferin, decided against challenging him [1]. Ceferin, the UEFA chief, had been a vocal critic of Infantino, particularly after the FIFA head was implicated in an attempt to sell stakes in major tournaments, including the World Cup.

Ceferin confirmed on Thursday that he will instead seek re-election as UEFA president for a fourth term in April, a U-turn from his 2024 statement that he would not seek another term [1]. He thanked national associations for their trust and stated his ambition to keep European football united.

Infantino also secured the backing of all 54 African member associations for his candidacy, following promises of further investment in the continent [2]. This pledge came after Infantino met with national association heads in Cape Verde, where Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe confirmed their unanimous support.

Motsepe highlighted the historical support Infantino has provided to African football as a key reason for their endorsement [2]. Infantino stated that FIFA has invested one billion dollars in Africa over 10 years through the FIFA Forward programme, supporting 124 different projects.

Another potential rival, Victor Montagliani, is also set to pursue re-election as CONCACAF president rather than challenging Infantino [1]. Candidates have until November 18 to declare their intentions, with former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega being one of the few to announce a challenge this week.

Despite these developments, UEFA remains steadfast in its demand for change at the top of FIFA, though a credible alternative candidate has yet to emerge following Ceferin's decision [1]. UEFA previously stated that FIFA needs new leadership, describing the ideal candidate as a respected and unifying figure deeply rooted in football. The story was first reported by Mirror and The Independent.
