Hannah Fry's Spreadsheet Strategy Against Traitors Backfires as She Joins Them

Mathematician Hannah Fry, who devised an Alan Turing-inspired spreadsheet to unmask Traitors, has now been recruited to join their ranks.

Mathematician and broadcaster Hannah Fry, known for her intricate, statistically-driven method to expose Traitors, has been recruited to become one herself on the popular show [1]. Her detailed strategy, which involved a spreadsheet tracking all possible Traitor combinations, was revealed to fellow contestant Joe Lycett earlier in the episode [2].

Fry's meticulous approach was inspired by Alan Turing's method for cracking the Enigma machine. She had planned to eliminate potential Traitor groups by tracking who sat together at breakfast, in cars, and at the roundtable, believing that three Traitors would rarely be found in close proximity [1].

Before the series began, Fry explained her plan on her YouTube channel, detailing how she would systematically rule out combinations of people that couldn't be Traitors. With 21 contestants, there were initially 1,330 possible universes of three Traitors [2].

By assuming she would remain a Faithful, Fry could reduce this number to 1,140. She also factored in the unlikelihood of the show's host, Claudia Winkleman, selecting three Traitors from the same demographic, such as three comedians or three young people, further narrowing the possibilities [1].

Fry estimated that by day four, her method would reduce the potential Traitor universes to just 72, and by day five, only a handful would remain. This, she believed, would bring her very close to identifying the actual Traitors [2].

Her preparation also included extensively analysing previous civilian and celebrity UK Traitors series. She made pages of notes on Traitor and Faithful behaviour, inputting this data into her spreadsheet to find statistically significant patterns [1].

However, Fry's elaborate plan took an unexpected turn during Thursday's episode. After both she and Jerry Hall returned to breakfast, indicating a recruitment had occurred, Fry was shocked to receive the letter herself [2]. Now, her statistical prowess must be used to maintain her cover as she attempts to play as a Faithful while secretly being a Traitor [1]. The story was first reported by Daily Mail Showbiz and Daily Mail.
