Counter-Terror Police Probe RAF Molesworth Intrusion
Two Latvian men were arrested at RAF Molesworth after Ministry of Defence Police discovered an abandoned vehicle and a breached perimeter fence.
Two Latvian nationals have been apprehended at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire after a security breach at the base [1]. The arrests followed the discovery of an abandoned vehicle and a damaged perimeter fence at the site, which is used by the US military and NATO for intelligence operations [4, 5].
Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) found the abandoned vehicle around 10pm on Wednesday. Subsequent searches by the MDP and Cambridgeshire Constabulary revealed a small breach in the base's fence [2, 3]. The two men, aged 36 and 32, were then arrested inside the base perimeter [2, 4].
Initially, the pair were detained for suspected unauthorized entry to a restricted area and property damage [2, 5]. However, they have since been further arrested under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023, which pertains to entering a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to the UK [2, 3]. Both men are UK residents [2].
Counter Terrorism Policing London is now leading the investigation, with Commander Helen Flanagan stating that while there is heightened interest in military sites, there is currently no indication this incident is linked to events at RAF Fairford last week [2, 5]. She emphasised that the investigation is in its early stages and officers are keeping an open mind regarding the men's motivation [2, 5]. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious [2, 5]. The story was first reported by Sky News and Daily Mail.
