Judge Blocks Trump Admin's Taxpayer-Funded Political Ads
A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to cancel taxpayer-funded TV ads promoting the president, calling them unlawful political propaganda [2].
A Manhattan judge has issued an immediate order to cancel taxpayer-funded television advertisements promoting President Donald Trump, ruling they constitute illegal political propaganda [1]. The decision comes after a lawsuit filed by watchdog group Common Cause, Democratic candidate Robert Hunter, and a New York labor union and its PAC [2]. The suit was one of several challenging the use of federal funds for political messaging, including a separate filing by the Democratic National Committee.
U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rochon of the Southern District of New York ruled that the plaintiffs had demonstrated a high likelihood of success on the merits, that they would suffer irreparable harm without an injunction, and that the public interest favored blocking the ads [2]. She specifically ordered the Trump administration to "cancel or cause to be cancelled" any ads set to air, including those scheduled for Sunday night.
The administration had claimed in a Saturday court filing that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), through a vendor, had only placed ad buys through Sunday and instructed the vendor not to purchase beyond that date [2]. However, Rochon ruled the case was not moot and that the government remains barred from using DHS funds to develop, create, disseminate, or air the ads.
The White House, DHS, and the Office of Management and Budget, all named as defendants, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. MAGA Inc., which Trump said last week would help fund future ads, also did not respond [2].
Plaintiffs hailed the ruling as a victory against government overreach. "We are pleased the court acted swiftly to prevent more taxpayer dollars from being used for such blatantly unlawful political propaganda," they said in a statement [2]. Common Cause President Virginia Kase Solomón added that the fight continues: "We won’t stop until this administration is held fully accountable, and no president from any party can waste and abuse taxpayer funds for propaganda ever again".
The ads, one of which mirrored a 2024 Trump campaign spot, had drawn criticism for blurring the line between government messaging and political campaigning [2]. The story was first reported by The Independent and NBC News.
